The News travelled far and wide.

Thank you, so much, for asking if we are safe.  We are .

The 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck at 12.02 a.m. this morning. It was centred 400km  in a direct line south of us,  and has  caused major damage to roads, homes and businesses. There have been Tsunami warnings, some have been downgraded to a coastal and marine watch. People have been told to stay away from all coastal areas.

Now, at 12.23 p.m. there have been 73 quakes  and many more classed as   after-shocks.

UPDATED 10:10am --- Significant tsunami waves which hit around Kaikoura after midnight's M7.5 earthquake have now started to ease and warnings for *land* are being lifted. Kaikoura recorded waves of 2.5 metres earlier this morning, Christchurch 1 metre and Wellington half a metre.

WeatherWatch.co.NZ says this is a historic earthquake and tsunami event for New Zealand.

We are about 400km ( 250 miles) in a straight line from the earthquake epicentre. We felt it, it rolled, it shook, I couldn’t stand or walk for a  minute, they say it lasted for 2 minutes. There is massive damage to roads in that area, houses reduced to rubble, and 2 people have died.

It was felt from Invercargill, in the far south to Whangarei in the far North, 800 miles or 1300 km from north to south direct line.

Christchurch Quake Map today

For those who have experienced this at a higher level, my thoughts are with you. Be brave, stay strong, for those who have  stolen property, you are a coward and a thief. Face up to what you have done and return those goods you took , from others in a very vulnerable position.  I hope you get caught and punished severely.

Thank you all again, the emails, Facebook comments, and phone calls  are  so  much appreciated. I am so grateful, thankful  and fortunate to have wonderful, caring, loving ,friends and family.

Quotation of the day, author unknown

“ Be prepared, it might not happen today,

or tomorrow, but someday it will”

Greetings from Jean.

Jean---this is the first I heard of the quake there. I'm glad you are safe and send my best wishes to everyone in the quake area. I'm afraid with all the craziness going on here in the States with the sore loser rioters after the election that's about all we're hearing about.

You were on my mind all day, and 'm so glad that all is well with you and you're safe. I hope and pray that it stays that way. And that all those who have lost so much, find comfort and safety.

Didn't realise first thing this morning that the 'quake had been felt u[ into the Central Plateau. Pleased you are all OK but not good that you had such a good shake there. It is devastating to see the destruction in the South Island once again, and dear Kaikoura which I loved. We used to travel that coast road through the tunnels when driving from Christchurch up to relatives in Blenheim. I hope and pray that help can be ferried or flown in to these stranded folk. Indeed to all who are in need right now.

Thank you all so very much, I had no idea the news would travel so far and so fast.
Kaikoura is one of the places badly damaged, and now isolated by slips north and south of the one main access road .
The repairs will be huge, costly, and take a long time. Railway lines, roads, bridges, and then the homes and businesses.
I am thankful for our safety, feel so sad for those who are in temporary accommodation as their homes have been so badly damaged, and so thankful for you, my friends.
AN UPDATE from the Internet.
--------------------------------------------------

• Major aftershocks, measuring 5.8, 5.9 and 6.0, have struck central New Zealand tonight - leaving stranded and rattled residents even more frazzled. There have been more than 400 aftershocks since this morning's huge 7.5 quake

• Kaikoura cut off as landslides bury State Highway 1 and main trunk rail line - emergency officials say the town has just three more days of water.

• 600 people are staying at a local marae. HMNZS Canterbury is on its way from Auckland to help evacuate 1100 stranded tourists. PM also considering using Air Force aircraft.

Glad to learn that you and your family are okay, Jean. What a dangerous and destructive event! As to the looting, that is simply deplorable! Sad to think that not everyone pulls together in the common goal of restoration. I hope that the land in your area has a long and peaceful rest before it stirs again.

I am so glad that you are all right, Jean. When I heard of the quake I immediately thought of you and Huge and your family. Of course, I thought of others too, but your family is my personal connection to New Zealand. I couldn't reply until right now because I have to go to a library to access the internet. I always say prayers for victims of an earthquake. It is an awful thing to go through, and the aftermath is difficult. I've been through a number of shakers and what I call gliders where the ground seems to slip more than rock during the years that I lived in California. But never a 7.5 which is a huge quake, much bigger than those I experienced. Take care, my special friend! Sending you hugs and love!

I thought of you and Hugh right away. Years ago when we visited NZ we experienced tremors near Picton, but nothing of this magnitude. Hugs to you and your country as the rebuilding begins.

I'm so glad toy hear you are OK. Earthquakes are scary even when you are not directly over the fault. Our school has regular practice drills and I am glad to see that even pre-schoolers take it seriously.
