Lest We Forget

25th April, 2016.
Dawn   Services  are being held  in so many places, cities, small towns and villages throughout New Zealand this morning. We remember those who served, those who gave their lives, those who came home, and the families of them all.
ANZAC,  the acronym from the initials of Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, the formation of Australian and New Zealand soldiers who were grouped in Egypt before the landing on Gallipoli in April 1915.
The Red Poppy is the symbol of remembrance, and the poem by  Lieutenant John McCrae “ In Flanders Fields” was written  after the burial of a  fellow officer  during the second battle  of Ypres in early May, 1915. Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD was a Canadian poet, physician, author, artist and soldier during World War I, and a surgeon during the Second Battle of Ypres, in Belgium. He was born in Guelph, Canada on November 30th, 1872, and died on January 28th, 1918, in Boulogne-sur-Mer, in France .   Ruffled Red Poppy 2015

from Lieutenant Colonel  John McCrae,

Greetings from Jean

A beautiful poppy, Jean, the fields of red poppies remind us every year of the sacrifice of the soldiers, but it is sad that the world is still not a place of peace, and blood continues to be shed.

Does one say happy Anzac Day...we have our Remembrance day in November. I think it is so important to remember. My grandfather died in England in the Second World War fighting in the British navy; my mom grew up without a dad so it is all very meaningful to me. Never tire of that poem.

A question: How come my letter X shows up in your sidebar? I have scheduled that post for April 28th and I know you are not that many days ahead. How weird. Any ideas? Right now I'm on the letter U.

In Flanders Field is a poem that is dear to my husband's heart, Jean. It is read here on our Remembrance Day.
We get the Anzac show here about your nurses and I just love it. I think of you when I watch it!
Take care-Kim

Oh, Jean! This is my favorite poem of all the poetry in the world! I learned to recite it in grade one, and it's words are engraved on my heart. Thank you for sharing it and for telling a little of John McRae's heroic service in conjunction with that of the brave ANZAC soldiers. We have been blessed with lives of peace and safety because of the sacrifices of so many who stepped up to serve at the cost of their own lives or at the cost of serious injuries, bodily and mentally.
