Today more snow fell in the south, and nearer to us on the Central Plateau. My short legs will struggle to get through any snow, far less the 18 inches, to one metre or more, much more further north near Lake Tekapo. I heard tonight there is so much snow, it will have to be taken away by trucks before it melts, or else there will be huge flooding, but not quite as dramatic and dangerous as I saw on TV, in Calgary. Rain and snow melt, then there is way too much water.
A few more photos from Otago, taken today, after another fall of snow made driving just that much more.. Exciting? Dangerous?, would walking in it be any better?? Sledding tomorrow, weather permitting!!!
This looks like deep snow, thank goodness for a plough, that makes the driving easier!!!

We have passed the shortest day, and now daylight hours might slowly start to be longer, Solstice has been, but temperatures will be colder. They hovered between 0 Celsius, and 1 Celsius, down south, and tonight down to –12 Celsius in inland and Central Otago and in Canterbury. Here we are almost tropical with about 6 C out, and a very warm 21 C inside.

Snow boots with heating?? I've never heard of such a thing, but what a "thing" they would be to have--There have been a lot of times I could have used them!! Your snow is beautiful, enjoy your day and stay warm!! :-)!!

Hi Jean, I am intrigued! Snow would be welcome here right now in Montreal (well, for myself, anyway, LOL!) but alas, we are due for a dangerously humid heat wave, beginning tomorrow. It could get as hot as 40 celsius.
Thanks for lovely words. The photos were taken by our daughter, showing the farm where she lives, in Otago. In some areas, the heaviest snowfall in decades, 3 feet to over 6 feet,causing huge problems for farmers, families, and road transport. Where we live, some 1600km (1000 miles) including a 3 hour ferry crossing , north from the farm, it is 3 Celsius this morning, rain and no wind. Yes, those boots, pure luxury, but maybe in this snow, necessity. Greetings to all, Jean.

Hi Jean - great photos from your daughter - we saw that Tekapo was snowed in on the news yesterday evening. I do still miss the winter snow which we had back in Lancashire UK.
Lindsjo, your home will be a little quiet, I'm sure they all have wonderful new homes; Maureen, yes, Tekapo has huge snow, 2 metres at the top areas. 2.4 C here earlier, and a little fog. Br-r-r! Just can't get my head around this as we are having humid weather here....too early for us!!
I have a brother and a niece and nephew in Calgary. All are fine and just managed to escape any flooding near them. My niece is a nurse and has to get to work where there is flooding along the way!
Yes Jim, definitely add Icebreaker too. We watched the Calgary flooding on TV, what a huge disaster, that is what the officials in Tekapo are thinking about, and plan to maybe truck all the snow out from the township area, 1 to 2 metres high, so a massive amount.Hope your niece is safe on the roads, does she have a 4WD?
