Winter Warmth is assured

Lately our days have been taken up with firewood, Baz felling, cutting, Hugh and I splitting, mulch has been spread, and some of last year’s dry wood is now in the shed. This year’s is split, and getting such wonderful sunshine, and lots of heat from the very hot days, so is starting to dry out already.

Photos of firewood days from 2005. My minimalist carpentry skills did not help at all in building this woodshed. My part was to pass the hammer, the  nails, and the  level, and keep the billy boiling!!!

This is our larger wood shed, it will be full  again, very soon.

This is on a friend’s farm. Old trees that had been felled for some years, huge logs, the large chainsaw coughed, but managed to get through.

More firewood Feb 2005

These are not the largest pieces, just some of the difficult bits, left for another day.

And this is where some of those logs  ended up,   as winter warmth.

The photos I have taken recently, of the wood and trees,  I cannot use here, as I am entering a

Photo Essay Competition,

and the rules state  that you cannot use a photo that has been published before. Some sorting, editing, and selecting to do, but once it is done, I will be very relieved. 5 to 10 photos, a title, no other words needed.

A huge challenge, but as  they say, use it or lose it, so I might as well use and keep, whatever “ it” might be.

Quotation of the day, from Haruki Murakami

“Nobody’s going to win all the time.

On the highway of life you can’t always be in the fast lane”

Greetings from Jean

Great shed, and what you did to help your husband building it was very important. I always helped DH with every project, we were a team. He always told me I was a good helper.

Love and hugs to you ~ FlowerLady

A lot of truth in that quote Jean!
Wood burners are such industrious people. The fellow next door has the tidiest woodpile I have ever seen. He is so meticulous....I love to watch from afar.
We opted to have a back-up system which uses propane gas after a major hurricane that hit about 7 years ago and knocked out power for 10 days. and since Ron is allergic to smoke, indoors and out, this was a good option for us.
Good luck in the photo contest Jean and keep us informed either way.

Lorraine, that was the easy shed, we did another from an expensive kitset, and I suggested that one of the uprights was too long, even though colour coded, so Hugh cut off 2 inches. WRONG.I had to go and buy another length!!!Yes, firewood dry and stacked ready for cold days, a very secure feeling.Jim, Propane is the best way to go for you, and maybe something similar for us next time.
Cheers from Jean.

Oh how I miss my fireplace.

Nancy J said...

Yes, Carol, I might too if we move, and have gas? oil? heat pump? or maybe just so many extra layers of winter clothes!!! But I will not miss the hot hard work in summer to have it ready for those cold days. Hi Barb, some work ahead before I send my entry, there is always a first time for many things, this is one for me!!!Susan, do you have any winter wood delivered yet? Greetings from Jean.

Hi Kat, well a competition is so different to what I do here. Careful selection might be needed in huge quantities. Ta so very much for lovely comments , made my day a lot happier. Greetings from Jean

Great firewood pics Jean, there's nothing like the feeling of a huge pile of firewood squirreled away in the hot summer days, knowing we'll be nice and snug in the cold winter days.....
Good luck for the photo competition.

Lovely looking firewood and a cozy wood fire. We aren't using our wood stove this winter as our insurance decided to double if we did. We're looking for a different insurer for next year. Good for you for entering the photo competition! Can't wait to hear how it goes.
